Millennium Trilogy
The Millennium Trilogy consists of
-“The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo“,
-“The Girl Who Played With Fire“, and
-“The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest“.
A well prepared debutant
Stieg Larsson began thinking about writing detective novels back in the early 90’s, according to co-worker Anna-Lena Lodenius in an interview with the Swedish newspaper Veckans Affärer. He had always been interested in particularly Anglo-Saxon literature and knew the works of Elizabeth George, Minette Walters and Sara Paretsky very well. He knew what ingredients a good detective story should have, and he even reluctantly decided to spice it up with a bit of sex as it would probably please his readers.
A regrettable refusal
As for his work as a journalist, his preparations for the series were thorough. Before he started writing, he had made a detailed synopsis for ten books. He started writing in 1997, and it was not until he had finished the first two books and had the third one under way that he contacted a publisher in the summer of 2003. His first contact was with publisher Piratförlaget, which refused his script twice, perhaps the biggest mistake in Swedish publishing history. Instead, it was the publisher Nordstedts which got the opportunity to sign him in late 2003. With them, Stieg Larsson signed a contract of three books, an exceptional opportunity for an unpublished writer. The publishing rights were also bought by German and Norwegian publisher before it was even published in Sweden. During 2004 Stieg Larsson made minor adjustments to his two finished books and finished the third. When he died in November 2004, it was only a few months before the first book of the Millennium Trilogy was released to the Swedish audience and became an immediate success.
Pippi Longstocking as a source of inspiration
Kenneth Ahlborn, a former colleague of Stieg’s at TT, says in an interview with Veckans Affärer that Stieg got the idea for the character Lisbeth Salander after a discussion during a break from work. They were talking about how different characters from children’s books would manage and behave if they were alive and grown up. Stieg especially liked the idea about a grown up Pippi Longstocking, a dysfunctional girl, probably with attention deficit disorder who would have had a hard time finding a regular place in the “normal society”, and he used part those characteristics when he created lisbeth Salander.
- “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo“
- “The Girl Who Played With Fire“
- “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest“
Screen versions of the Millennium Trilogy
It early became clear that the very popular books would be made in screen versions. In 2008 production began in Sweden, and the three books was shot back-to-back into three movies during the following year. The three movies were given the same names as the books. They were received almost equally well, as for example evidenced by the inclusion of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo on The Vore’s 15 most suspenseful psychological thriller film list. In the Swedish versions, male actor Michael Nyqvist plays Michael Blomkvist, while Noomi Rapace plays Lisbeth Salander.
Meanwhile the books were a major hit all over the world and it did not take long for Hollywood to see the huge potential in the thrilogy. The legal rights for the novels were set between Columbia Pictures, Stieg Larssons brothers and father and Yellow Bird, the production company behind the swedish films. Production was put on a fast track and the the search to fill the roles started.
In the end Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig were casted as leads playing Lisbeth Salander and Michael Blomkvist.

Fantastic writer.
Michelle, Midlands, U.K
I saw the first two books in the tiny English section of a bookstore here in Spain, and I decided to get them because my boyfriend’s mom recommended them. I just finished the second book last night, and I can’t wait for the third! It’s a shame that it doesn’t come out sooner. And I also think it will be a shame if they make movies out of these. In my opinion movies never do a good book justice!
- Monica, Madrid Spain,
Cannot believe i have to wait until 2010 for the last book! oh well gives me an excuse to read the first 2 all over again!

I just finished the first book and waiting for the second, not available till July. I was so caught up in this book and can’t wait to start the next. I’m so sorry to find out that Steig Larsson has died and that these books will be his last and only. How tragic for the reading world.
- Jules,
Just finished “Tattoo” on my way back from Amsterdam to the States. Made the flight just fly by! I’ve read all of Mankell and thought Larsson was going to be my future “Swedish fix,” but like others, I too late learned about the early death of the author….
- Ron,
Just finished the first book and can’t wait for the bookstores to open tomorrow so I can lay my hands on the second and third.
- Joanne, Canada,

- Sandra, Greece,
One of the best (actually, two of the best) novels I have read in a long long time. I am very much looking forward to “Castles In The Sky”, tho’ it will be a long wait.
- Jon Husband,
I knew nothing about the series or the author, and was completely enthralled by the plot and the characters, like many other readers, reading vol 1, and now vol 2 til 2 or 3 in the morning. One of the best reads I have ever had.It is indeed a tragedy that Larsson died at 50. I have to say that on almost every page someone is chain smoking, drinking hard, and taking coffee, and I wondered if that was also a background to Larssons untimely death of a heart attack? What a loss .
- Denise, Canberra , Australia,
I want to purchase the book series and the CDs in Swedish; how can I do that? Also, is the Swedish language (or English language) film of Man Som Hatar Kvinnar available yet? If so, where? Great stuff!
- Linnea, USA,,
Just read the first book – oooooooooooooh, it’s too good to be true. One of the best novels I have read lately. It made me laugh and cry, and most importantly: feel.
- Lila, Madrid,
I wonder why Larsson named his first novel “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”. Why her? There are much crazier characters and yet he names it after her. Why?
- Josh,
i wish he wus still alive so he could finish writing these books, they r sooo good
- ms,
From what I’ve heard the original title in Swedish is Men who hate Women.. The english translated version for some reason is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
- Karolina,
I’m sorry, the right title of the book published in Italy is “The Stockholm of Stieg Larsson. A guide to the places of Millennium Trilogy”.
- Caterina,
In Italy there is a book called “The places of Millennium Trilogy” with photograps of places in Stockholm where Lisbeth and Mikael lived. I immediately bought it, in order to use it during my stay in the Scandinavian countries next summer.
- Caterina, Italy,
Have just enjoyed reading The Girl Who Played with Fire over the Easter Long weekend here in Australia. Sensational read as I love the complexity of the characters. It will be a long wait for the English translation for book #3.
- Sean (Sydney, Australia),
What an amazing first two books. I just finished nr 2 and can’t wait to read nr 3, even though it will have to be in French for now. The best books I read in the last year. I would love to have a peak at the manuscript of the 4th (my poor Swedish allowing)
- chris, Hong Kong,
Just finished “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” this morning! Sent the kids to school, crawled back into bed and read to the end. I read most of the book the other day flying from New York to the West Coast. After the first very boring and tedious 100 pages, I couldn’t put it down! I think that this series could use more press in the U.S. I’m ordering the 2nd book today!!!
- Beth B.,
I have read the first novel. One of the best books I have ever read. Unfortunately, in my country, the second and third books have not been released yet, but, “The girl who played with fire” is promised to be coming soon. I can´t wait!!!!!
- RENATO,
i heard that his woman has in his computer the forth book completed do you know if it will be brought out?
- cibelle,
I have never EVER read such fascinating crime-novels as the Millennium series. Had to restrain myself jumping over sentences, so enticed I was to find out what was going to happen next… Great entertainment AND food for thought !
- Marc Jacobs,
I loved the first two, can’t wait for the 3rd to come out in English!!!! JANUARY 2010 is a long time to wait
- Judi, Paris France,
I just finished Girl With Dragon Tattoo. WOW it may be the best mystery/crime book I have read. I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next. Besides to his family, the literary world lost a great talent upon his death. I am certain he had many more stories in him. Thanks Stieg.
- Diana Reese,
Steig Larsson was more than talented. I was captured by the story as I read the first page. The story is so well crafted and the characters are fantastic. The players are flawed, yet I like them. I am devistated that the English translation of the third book will not be available until 2010. I am so happy that these jewels were made available in the English language.
Barb Webster
- Barb F. Webster, Virginia, USA,
Steig Larsson’s work is absolutely amazing. He was more than talented and that is clearly displayed in both of the first two books. I was immediately captured by the story as I read the first page of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I am devistated that the third book will not be available to English readers until 2010. Thank you for making his stunning books available.
Barbara Webster

I had a lull in my reading. When I read The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, I couldn’t wait to sit and read it. I read it in a couple of days, it was so engrossing. I pre-ordered The Girl Who Played with Fire. I am chopping at the bit to get it.
- Alex,
There is now a hole in my life that Lisbeth and Mikael once occupied. Larsson’s story-telling is brilliant!
Lizzie
I’m actually happy I understand french, the third one is already out in french. :]
- Lulu the Fairy,

I’ve just finished the first one translated in spanish (Los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres). I read it in 14 hours! I can’t wait to get my hands on the next. What a shame that the author died before seeing the success of the novels.

The two books in english were excellent, it is
refreshing to read this and i have loved every minute

- togram,
WOW!!! The first two books are wonderful, it pulls you to its core. BEST detective novels ever!!! The second is better than the first one btw.
- mushu,
I’m just finishing volume 3 in french as the first 2 were so good (in english – i assume even better in original swedish) – would make an awesome film triliogy -e.g. done by the team who did Bourne…
- jon crowcroft,
Has anyone here read the triology in Swedish? I can read both French and English and assumed an English translation would be closer to the original language. I bought the first volume (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), but since the other two were not yet available in paperback (the second volume is now), I started reading the whole series in French. Other than the title, the English translation of the first volume appears better to me than the French. Is there someone out there who can compare the English and French translations with the original Swedish?

Can’t stop reading!!!!!
- Sofia,
Just finished “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and yes I loved it. I have to agree that the ending got me. I’m looking for the 2nd of the series so that I can follow Lisbeth; who’s character has truly touched me. Bren, AR, USA
The 3rd book is out in Danish, and sorry we shall have to wait for the English edition. Still being able to read in several languages, am half way thru the 3rd. Again if countries/goverments just let schools teach more languages, more people would not ahve to wait for books in one specific language, as could read it in another. Government schools do not help with languages. Each child should have the ability to read and speak at least 3 languages and be tought at least some of 5 languages. Keep learning!
- Poul Gottlieb Jacobse Denmark/USA/World,
Hey, I’m from Spain and the third book is wonderful though I must say that the second is the best!!! Lisbeth is my new idol XDD
Enjoy the reading!!
- Jon Pascual (Oviedo, Spain),

I just finished reading The Girls with the Dragon Tatoo! I read it in one day, although took me all day… was that good! I loved the two characters: Mikeal and Lisbeth. Will pass the book onto friends with a reading club. I am deeply sorry that Mr. Larsson isn’t going to write more…
- JessicaFS ,
Loved all three books (Dutch). Sad I finished reading… Boyfriend is happy though, between my job, our one year old son and these books I didn’t have time for him att all. His loss he preferss tv over books!
- Hester Frijke (the Netherlands),
As a result of the extraordinarily addictive power of these books, I think that Larsson has managed to create one more phenomenon in addition to the quality of his writing. That is, for the first time since I can recall, an English speaker is truly at a disadvantage! The English translation is hotly anticipated not only by myself but by the looks of this blog, many others. Although unintentional, I think the fact that the translation into English is delayed should remind those who only speak/read English and therefore who’ve had a pretty easy ride in terms of language may want to address that discrepancy. I know I will! It’s time to take up French and German again – and STICK with it this time!!!!!
I like to think that Larsson would enjoy this little by-product of his brain-child xx
- Baroness von Coma, Melbourne,
dianetics what does it have to with Stieg Larson ?
- seb,
If you read the English translations, DON’T let the Swedish settings put you off. The atmosphere he creates is simply wonderful. I don’t want the first book to end and I can’t wait to read the second.
- Bill Brogan, California,

My only comment is: How can we live now without him and the following chapters of the story?
I’ve never read something so involving and last year I spent some time in Stockholm and other places in Sweden, such as Vasteras, so the moment I started reading the books I felt like being there with them!
- Daniela,
The millenium-series..I watched in Paris and wanted so much my friend to see it in London…where can I find the DVD or why has the film not released in England???????????????
Beatrice
One of the best story teller. I read the 2 books of the trilogy series and did not put them down until I finshed them. So sad that I finished the book.
My only comment is: Wish he had a long life.
Waiting for the 3rd book in English.

As I’ve been so focused for a few weeks reading the 3 novels, now I feel that I need to keep digging into that history! It’s such a shame there won’t be more millenium books.
One of the best triologies ever!!!

Re: the audiobooks (and especially The Girl Who Played With Fire): Are there NO biliingual Swedish-English speakers who could actually accurately pronounce Swedish words!?!?!?! Hideously disctacting to the text being read, the mispronunciations of the audiobook reader!
- Linnea Johnson,
I have reading the 3 books in mine holiday.

I will recommend this book to every one, who loves to read

- beth, maryland, USA,
God I loved the first book and have started the second. I am so sorry he died and did not know his success
- Celeste Brooks, Oakland, CA, USA,
I just finished 1st book. It was the best thriller I ever read. Stunning. It was recommended to me and I thought early on that it would be full of European political correctness. Indeed it was but the plot was so good that it didn’t matter. I can’t wait to start the next one. Can it possibly be as good?
- Henry Porter -Cork, Ireland,
I’ve just finish reading book 2, can’t wait for book 3. The story had be spelled bound. I’m trying to find book 3. It does not seem to be available at the moment in English.
- Claude Potter, Hackensack, NJ,
I’m in the middle of book 2. Actually paid $25 for a hardcover, which I never do, but wanted the second book so badly because the first was EXCELLENT!!!!! The best read in many moons. How sad that someone so talented has passed.
- DMV, Waretown, N.J>,
Both books are incredible. The character development, the likability of the various heroes – and there are a few of them – the nobility and the hope for redemption….and revenge…I just loved them, and can’t wait for the third. All of this tempered by sorrow that the author isn’t around to write more and to enjoy his accolades.
- Ahmad, San Francisco,
I was usually a compulsive reader, with a good book I couldn’t stop reading . that was with “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” was really amazing, but with the second, to my surprise, was so great the pleasure to reading it, that I do it very slowly as if I were eating an special cake sweet, terrific and delightful.
Is a pity Stieg don’t be here to live it.
- María Rosa,
I can not wait for the next book to come out!
- Sandra Olson, Trail BC Canada,
The story in this book, almost real in my experience, is much more than what I have read in past 43 years ! Or, my past 43 years’ experience made me to feel that this book is fantastic. I have just half finished in reading “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” and I already know that I will get all the Millenium-series and will read several times before I even look to anything new !
- Mitsunori, Yokohama,
Just completed “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and have only one word WOW! How wonderful to be forever left hanging on a cliff.
- sheree blum,
It is a good book. Just finished the first one. I will buy the second and third book.
- Totoro, Holland,
Is it possible to get a copy of the third book in English anywhere, or do I have to wait until the October 2009 release in the US?
- Jen,
I love the first 2 books. When is the third book available in he U.K and Britain?
- Eileen (California),
In the Netherlands we are priveleged to have the third book already avalilable in Dutch. I won’t give anything away but yes, its good, better best!
- Stanislaw, Sittard (NL),
Man, what a story TGWTDT….. I normally only buy second hand books but I think I’ll buy the next two new so I can give a little something back to the Larsson family… LEGEND.. Rest in Peace mate…..
- Noeski, Melbourne,
How can I get the details for the “Trip to Stockholm” contest?
- THOMAS MIX,
I couldn’t hold a tear when I knew Mr. Larsson left this world so early!!
I’m waiting for that 3rd book like a kid looking a desert…
- John, Florida,
All 3 books are incredibly good! Can anyone tell me when the dvd of the film is released in Belgium?
I haven’t even read these books yet but have ordered the first two and they are now on there way. I can’t wait, I didn’t realize these books had such a huge following and I’m always excited when a series becomes big. Hopefully no horrible movies will be created based on the books and ruin the story for people who don’t read the actual story. Examples being ‘Harry Potter’ and Phillip Pullmans series. However back to the book in question, I’m always weary when I begin reading a book by an author I don’t know, It takes me a while to adjust to their style of writing. Heres hoping they live up to the hype…
- Kay Millen,
Just finished reading the first two books back to back in 3 days. I need food, sleep and a shower! When’s the 3rd book released in Britain? Is there an English Language version in US before then?
- David Etches,
i loved both books and can hardly wait for #3.. Lizbeth Salander keeps me hanging on for dear life. love her computer knowledge and how fearless she is.
Am so sad that Steif Karrson is no longer with us to enjoy all that he has created and given to us.
How can we keep the nagic going ???????????

just back off holiday and couldn’t put the books down, on the beach, on the loo, before bedtime, first thing in the morning. Books now in the family reading circle and my wife is just a the end of book 2 and has given her niece book 1.
Read the second book first, bought in a supermarket on a whim. Now going back to the first book. Bought in a small home-town bookshop. What a story. I’ve read it in English, so I would like to give some credit to the translator for capturing the essence of SL’s wonderful prose.

Wow what a trilogy Stieg (RIP)? Kalle and Wasp combo just made your novel one of the very best ever written. The most enjoyable complex thriller with sheer and unimaginable suspense from start to finish.
- Ola John,
I am two thirds of the way through his 2cd book and want to know the ending now. On the other hand I do not want to finish it as I am enjoying it so much.
Salander is nothing like the central figure we come to expect but very well portrayed by the author making her credible.
- barry shepherd,
I’m halfway through the 2nd book and I’m trying to read it as slowly as I can so as not to reach the end. I can’t wait to read the third because Larsson’s plots are really engrossing. I’ve been having no success in finding the English version so far here in Madrid. They tell me it’ll be out in October and so I asked a friend to track it down for me in the States, but she says it doesn’t seem to well-known there.
- C. Marty,
I’m looking forward to reading Dragon Tattoo for my bookclub. Another friend read it and enjoyed it immensely. However, I was disappointed to learn that the text-to-speech feature on my Kindle was disabled for this book. I hope you’ll ask your publisher to enable it in the future. I’ve become a reader who partially reads and partially listens (when I’m in the car for 15 minutes). In the future I’ll probably only buy books that give me both optioins; I suspect other ebook readers feel the same way.
the spanish title was changed … not the same
- wasp,
The best book i’ve ever read….The characters…the plot…..i’m addicted in just 10 first pages i read….Lisbeth salander is the manifestation of genious and childishness, she is my favorite detective so far…Sadly to say that we have lost another magic maker…Hopefully the movie will reach my country soon….
- Dwi Insani, Indonesia,
I have listened to the first 2 books on CD and am anxiously awaiting the release of the third this fall. I listen to books as I drive from home to home. I could not wait until I could get back in my car to hear more. The narrator is excellent to listen to. At the end of “The Girl Who Played With Fire” I was disappointed. I was not aware of the third book in the series. Now I am very happy to find out about the third! 8/26/09
- Re Re United States,
Dear C Marty, why dont you order the English version online from Amazon? Cheers Anne
- Annemerel,
i don’t ‘do’ crime/investigation novels… well usually… half way through ‘the girl who played with fire’ and can’t put it down. It’s clever and the Swedish setting and characters are refreshing.
What am i going to do till release of book 3???
- Sab, London,
Quite simply the best author I’ve read in a long time – and while he’s not here in person, Stieg has given life to an amazing character in Lisbeth. She fights on in his absence.
- Leo,
The Millennium Series is brilliant writing!! Have read first two and can’t wait for the third to be released. Have achieved absolutely nothing done but reading for the past three days. Stieg Larsson is a talented author and am so sorry that the story of Lisbeth Salander won’t continue past the three books, and that Stieg Larsson won’t be around to see and hear the great acclaim for his Millennium Series. Looking forward to the movie being released one day in Australia…
- Cal, Australia,
Don’t know how I can wait for the third book! I’m on the Amazon list for it – Autumn 2009. Read .. ‘Dragon Tatoo’ and was totally ‘pulled in’ in the first 5 pages. The second, ..’Played With Fire’ equally engrossing. A marvelous writer and a real loss to the genre.
- Denise,
FYI, I found the DVD on Amazon yesterday.

I saw the movie for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” while I was in Spain (they pride themselves in their dubbing ability, whereas in the U.S. we’re lazy. For this, I don’t expect to see it in the U.S.) , but I didn’t know that that was what it was, because the Spanish title translates to “Men that didn’t love women”. I recognized the author’s name in a book store when I got back to the States and realized that that’s what it was, picked up the second book, and read it in two days. Now I’m dissappointed that I didn’t pick up the third one while I was in Spain – I’d have to read it in Spanish, but at least I’d have it…
- Melissa. Michigan, USA,
I bought mine in WHSmith and finished the book in two days
It’s just been released in hardback in England so Amazon ought to stock it if it’s not on the shelves
- Cris, Bracknell, UK,
I’m so glad to have “discovered” this series (by chance)and only wish the author might have lived many more years so we could keep on enjoying it. I love the main characters, especially Lizbeth, since I know there are many young people with her same problem that are totally misunderstood by society..
- Abby,
Brilliant, brilliant books. Can’t wait for the third in the series! Just finished the “girl who played with fire”, what a heroine and Blomkvist’s not so bad either!! A shame that the author died so tragically and so young. He would have been an author you would have prayed could write one or two books a year. Hope he at peace now and giving the finger to the publishers that turned him down the first two times!!!!!
- Ellie,
Where did you find a DVD of the Swedish movie with English subtitles?
- caffeine,
Did you find the dvd in the states?
Just watched the girl with the dragon tattoo and had to com ehere to write how gd the film is – english subs of course. now i need to read the other two book sof his. such a shame he died because as a writer myself (and judging by the film) he knows the elements you need for a good novel and the story is tight too.
- leroy,
Atually, the first book in Swedish is called Men that hates women, but the publisher thought it was too strong so when they decided to launch it abroad they change the title.
Well for once being able to also read in Italian is a plus… have already read the trilogy. I was soooo glad that I had the third book ready and waiting when I finished the second!!! So amazed to also find out that the books were translated into Italian before English!!!! Ciao
- Daniela
I read the book Man who hates women, which does not belong to the trilogy, but it is one of the best books I ever read. I hope to read the whole Mill. series soon to make a better critique.
Heart attack.
- LL,
how did he die?
- glen,
These would make excellent films!
- Stephane’,
We’re fans of Stieg Larsson, we read the 3 books and we’re waiting the movies 2 and 3. Lisbeth Saander is very brave!!!
- Joby-May Condaya @ Elisabet Manent,
I have seen the movie. 5 out of 5 !! I am so impressed with the strong characters. Good actors and unbelievably good acting… I was totally hooked for almost 2.5 hours. Very recommended.
