Martin Vanger and Herman Webster Mudgett
I just finished reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It wasn’t my favorite book, but I found the Martin Vanger character (and perhaps his father Gottfried) some how reminiscent of the serial killer Herman Webster Mudgett whose activities were detailed in Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City. Anyone else familiar with both books and have an opinion on this? I wonder who served as the inspiration for the Vanger character. Both men had torture chambers and preyed on women.

I’ve always thought that Sweden was such a great place. Is Larsson’s expression of the violence and criminal activity true?

The crime rate in Sweden is very, very low. I love Sweden as well! This is fictional, but things like this happen. All over the world sadly…

I checked the stats one year – that year, Sweden had 16 murders in the whole country, all cleared up by Dec 31. In that same year, Washington DC had 80 murders a month.
