Background
Stiegs grandfather, an inspiring role model
Stieg Larsson was born in Vasterbotten in northern Sweden in 1954. At the time of his birth, his parents were too young and too poor to keep him, so he was raised by his grandparents in a small village in the north of Sweden.
Stieg’s grandfather, Severin Boström, became the male role model for the young Stieg. Severin was strongly anti-fascist (and during the Second World War he was imprisoned in the work camp in Storsien for his anti-Nazi opinions)*. Had he been Danish, he would no doubt have been placed in a German Concentration Camp. The fate of his grandfather deeply affected and shaped Stieg’s character. He wanted to protect equal rights and fight for democracy and freedom of speech in order to prevent history, and what happened to his grand father, from repeating itself.
* Stieg’s father, Erland Larsson, says to stieglarsson.com that nobody in the family can confirm the information about the camp.
Youth, left-wing movement and far travels
When Stieg was nine years old, his grandfather died and he moved to live with his parents and his younger brother. Stieg was given a typewriter for his 12th birthday, and he spent most nights of his youth staying up writing, keeping his family awake with the drumming sound. At 18 years of age he met Eva Gabrielsson at an anti-Vietnam War meeting in Umeå. Eva was to become his life long companion. With some short exceptions, mainly due to the fact that Stieg was sometimes too obsessed with his work, they lived together until Stiegs death the 9th November 2004. After his military service, Stieg travelled in Africa and has been described as “an early backpacker”. He rarely had enough money on his travels, in an interview with Norra Västerbotten in 2006, his father describes how he had to work as a dishwasher and sell his clothes to afford a ticket home from Algeria.
Stieg Larsson was also interested in Science Fiction. Among other things was he the chairman of the Scandinavian science fiction society and published two magazines.
A life under constant threat
During the last 15 years of his life, he and his life companion Eva Gabrielsson lived under constant threat from right-wing violence. When a labor-union leader was murdered in his home by neo-Nazis in 1999, the police discovered photos of and information about the couple in the murderer’s apartment. So it was not without reason that the couple took precautionary measures. They were never seen together outside the house, they moved mirrors in the hall and they always kept the blinds down. Those are just a few examples. Stieg was an expert in the area, and wrote a book of instructions on how journalists should respond to threats for the Swedish Union of Journalists (“Överleva Deadline”, 2000).
Writing as a relaxation
The situation created a contrast between Stieg’s work at Expo and his night-time novel writing. He regarded his writing of detective novels as relaxing. Keeping track of loose ends, characters and made up conspiracies posedno problem since it was, after all, fiction and no one would threaten either Eva or himself because of it.

- Andrew Glass,
First of all my condolences to Mr. Larsson’s family and loved ones. Have read the first two and I am half way through the 3rd book.
It is refreshingly realistic yet hopefull of attaining a more just society.
I would like to recommend to Eva & family to enter a relationship with a highly skilled “ghost writer ” that can continue developing the many unexplored opportunities that remain ahead. If Robert Ludlum continues, I know the World will be a better place if Stieg Larsson continues to enlighten us. with his message of hope.
Regards< Ralph
- Ralph Krumhansl,
The way he made Lisbeth in the novel could possibly make all of us want to become a detective.

I read the first book in less than one week (fast for me). I am now half way through the second book, and loving it just as much as the first book. The books keep you glued to your chair.
- Golda,,
It took me a while to get into ” The girl with the dragon tattoo ” but boy oh boy, I’m so glad I persevered, what a story, what a writer! I’m nearing the end and book two is already waiting on my bedside table.
- Pete,
i hate those books! GO DIE IN A HOLE NOBODY LIKES YOU! I LOVE YOU!
- GARRET,
Great writter – after all he made me read more than 1.500 pages … I´m gonna miss him on my bookcase.
His death sounds pretty scketchy, does any think the same

The great always die young. It is unfortunate. He accomplished his mission and he is on another journey. However, I am glad that he left us with a brilliant work of art.
- carmel,
Read the first two quickly and I’m just finishing The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest. I find that I’m reading this one much more slowly, as there won’t be any more. Very sad. Thanks for the books, Steig!
- Randy,
You will enjoy the second one even more! I’m starting the 3rd!!!!
- mar,
so sad that there won’t be any more books written by Stieg Larsson. great great books….i will re-read them very soon i think and have recommended them to several friends.

Considering the section beginning “During the last 15 years of his life,…” has anyone speculated that Larsson is NOT dead, but had good reason to “disappear”?
- Linda Burnham,
He died of a heart attack
- Robbie,
What a prime example of injustice. Go Eva and fight for what Steig would have wanted. It shows the necessity of making your wishes known about your estate. Heather, Australia.
Didn’t think I would like these books, but excellent, interesting, historical…and yes, reminded me of Pippi…

I’m so glad that Stieg Larsson was able to finish the trilogy. It is so sad that he couldn’t live to see the success and fame that he has achieved. His writing style leaves the reader wanting more. He was a remarkable man, and a very talented writer. In my opinion, he ranks up there with the best murder/mystery greats.

Love this post. I understand what you are saying for the most part but could you please clarify what you mean by defining themselves as ‘separate from life’?
- Tara V,
That Larrson was a Nazi fighter his entire working career and that is what his newspaper did was expose and hunt Nazi criminals which there are many of over there.
Steig Larsson tells a story we all need to hear and take seriously. I just saw the movie, The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo and some how this story and the Character of Lisbeth brought home the Anti-Feminine, Anti Life twist that is at the core of Fascism. It has been around a long, long time.
I thought it was about Jews and Germany but through this movie I now believe Fascism is really about hatred of innocence, and the purity of life which is expressed by the earth and the physicality of the feminine. Fascist have been taught to hate and define themselves as separate from life. That angry separation makes them obsessed with desire to control the power of the feminine to create life itself. They hate and want to control that power for themselves because they live outside life. I am grateful for this clarification in the way I think about Fascism.
I understand why Steig was a threat to fascist. Bless him for creating a Feminine Heroine who has the guts to stand up against this corruption of human consciousness. I believe it is the feminine that must empower and stand up and never allow this negation of the power of life to be defiled. I am inspired. I am ready to read more and see more.
- Ruth Goodman,
ya, yes maybe it would follow his style. Interesting that his own life partner is “left hanging cause she was not in his will”. But she does not seem like the type who will be bitter or contest the will. If he did go into hiding then what does that say about how is fortune is being managed and by whom? He didn’t have a close relationship with his brother and if he planned a disappearance why wouldn’t he have revised his will?
I hope that this is what he has done, because he is a great writer, and a brave man.

JUST FINISHED GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO….CAN’T WAIT TO START THE NEST…WHAT A TALENT DRAWING CHARACTERS !! SO SAD TO LEARN HE’S GONE…I WANT MORE !!! WOW !!!! LOVE THE WAY HE WROTE….
- ANALUPE,
Finished reading the second book, incredible, fascinating, easy to read, unpredictable… definitely among my favorite books! What a great writer, and what a pity he left us so early. Can’t wait to read the last one. Will recommend him to all of my friends.
- Alona,
Hey has anybody made a connection with Stieg Larsson’s death and the deaths of Chris Harman and Howard Zinn more recently? Check it out.

And his father and brother won’t give Eva anything? What’s up with that. Cruel people.

Once I picked up book 1, I couldn’t put it down and before I knew it, I finished book 2 and – followed that up by watching the 1st film.
What can I say that hasn’t been said? Clearly, the most amazing books and films to come along since I can remember with unforgetable characters and edge of the seat excitement!
The only thing I am distressed about is the Americans planning a re-make (and I am American!)… Please, please Hollywood – back off, as perfection cannot be topped! Noomi Rapace IS the only Salender!!
- Marshel,
Took me about three times to really get into the first book, but was really glad that I just didn’t put it aside and forget about it.Absolutey great read so that made the second one evan better.I am on to my third and going to be sad it is the last of his books.

What an amazing trilogy, i read all three from start to finish in 5 days, i couldnt put them down! Such a talent, its a real shame he diied before he saw what a phenomenon he had created and before he got a chance to finish the ten he had planned….lets hope Eva takes up the chalice of the unfinished fourth….RIP Stieg, your a legend…
- Sarah M,,
I just finished The Girl Who Played With Fire this morning, and plan to pick up his 3rd today. I am so disappointed to know that it will be my last opportunity to enjoy Mr. Larsson’s writing.Debbie Davis, Phoenix, AZ

I’m so glad I found this writer and also saddened by his death. He is my favorite detective author and it is my loss that he cannot write another trilogy. He was so talented and kept you so engrossed in his novels that you couldn’t put them down from the time you began reading them.
- Connie Ward,
His triology of books took over my whole life when reading them. the best books I have read in a long time and I am still thinking about them even though I know they are fictional.
- Eileen Kensinger,
Just finished the second book and can’t wait to pick up the third. Best series of crime thrillers – or, indeed, books of any genre – I have read in an age. Wonderfully complex, enigmatic and interesting characterisation; and plot sequencing that grips and takes you on a roller-coaster ride of unforseen and thoroughly engaging twists and turns. The biggest crime of all is that this man is not around to write more!
- PC Barnwell,
I sooo agree with you they were amazing it would be such a shame if they didn’t finish the stories…

If you think the US version was good, you really need to watch the Swedish trilogy. It is absolutely spectacular and far better than the American attempt.

Have just finished “Girl with the Dragon Tatoo” and am about to begin the second of the series. As a psychotherapist who has spent 25 years working with survivors of childhood sexual assault, I am impressed with Mr. Larsson’s ability to illustrate the survivor’s ability to integrate extreme behaviors into their lives in a reasonable way. I mourn his loss as a voice for millions of trauma victims.

Why doesn’t someone start a non-profit / donation cause: for every book you read by Steig Lasson, send another $5 to the fund — for Eva Gabrielsson. She should be honored for her devotion.

I usually don?t read very many of these types of novels; however I have thoroughly enjoyed the first one and very definitely intend to read the other two. It is a shame that such a talented writer died so early. But life does move on and now that he is gone we should look closer at the left over pieces from his very creative life.
One of the more troubling aspects is that his lifelong companion, Eva Gabrielsson, has been completely ignored by his surviving family members and gets no share of the wealth from his creative efforts. She, because of her love and allegiance to him was also in a life threatening situation just as well as he was. It seems to me that she should also share in the spoils of her life partner because it is obvious that he also loved her if he stayed with her right up until his untimely death. It is a shame and indicative of the greed of his family.

The most gripping books(trilogy) I’ve ever read. Have connections to so many place names in the book, Stockholm, Arnholma, Uppsala, Goteburg, and Estonia (Tallinn) which added another dimension to the reading. A loss to the (literary) world. Conspiracy theories on his death? I will miss Salander.

I have just finished Mr. Larsson’s first two novels, ordered the third from the local bookstore. I am a survivor of family violence, have the steel plate in my face to prove it, and also have twins with Asperger’s Syndrome. I am of Norwegian-English descent and have thoroughly related to all he has written. I mourn his loss as an advocate for the victims domestic and family violence, and pray his work will go on; I do all I can on my own her e in South Georgia, USA. Thank-you, Mr. Larsson, where ever you are. I am also a former investigative reporter, and can relate to that aspect of his writing as well. His trilogy is an excellent monument to his existence.
- Barbara Parsons,
Just a coincidence – his death? Just after he had delivered all three parts of the trilogy? Odd that an author would hold on to three blockbusters (he must have at least some idea that these stories would be block buster) until they were all finished before delivering them. And then he dies of a heart attack. Sounds like something straight out of the trilogy. Did he ‘know’ something? Did he think something might happen? Are there instances of many authors writing a whole trilogy before delivering?
- Pat in Victoria BC,
I say this: buy second hand, used ones. If only to read. And not to keep or collect. Even then. If you are not in a hurry I am sure one would pop up sooner or later in the secondary market. Of course secondary market has a way of contributing to its primary one. But perhaps for now. This is a good idea for those who only wants to read, and not collect, the books. It is understandable to me why Larsson is such a feminist and extremely passionate about what is wrong with his society and country. His own life partner is now suffering from an outrageously outdated law which discriminates against an unmarried woman in the case of his estate, and against unmarried life partners and unmarried couples in general. We can only hope, that his life
-partner’s quest to change this law in Sweden will serve to highlight Larsson’s legacy not only as a brilliant author, but also in his stand as a fighter of equal rights.

Sonia – you are right. Too early and probably a lot more to give.

I haven’t read the books yet but hope to get to them (so many books, so little time….). I’m inspired by his story and committment to his causes. A comment was made that his life partner is not getting any of the proceeds of his books. Did he not have a will made up? This is why people need to make a will, otherwise it’s the courts that decide, and those who one meant to help/provide for are at risk of being left out
- LaurieR.,
Having just completed the third book and not slept for a week due to being totally transfixed with the brilliance of Stieg Larsson’s trillogy, I am now wondering what to do now it’s over. Having not read a book in fifteen years I was given the series as a gift. I began with dragon tattoo and was hooked in five minutes. Only now have I found out that Stieg died in 2004 and am gutted. I am now desperate for more of the same and welcome any help in finding more great reads.
- Jeff Whitehead, Stalybridge,
At a guess, the three books must total around two thousand pages or close to it. It took me just over a week to read all three. Together they form one of the most superb works of literature I’ve ever read. I haven’t seen the original film and I’m hugely skeptical that the dreaded English language remake will be nothing less than rubbish. But you never know.

I haven’t seen the original film and I’m hugely skeptical that the dreaded English language remake will be nothing less than rubbish. But you never know.

Blomkvist, I envy you.
Salander, I love you.

-10 .I thought perhaps a little tighter editing in the middle of the third book would have prevented that feeling of tediousness—but the race to the end was spellbinding. What a tragedy to lose such a talent so young. I hope his companion can find it in her heart to publish more of his wonderful work.

Jennjfer, maybe you should go back to reading Dick and Jane.To presume that Dan Brown’s work ever approached that of Larrson’s, to me is ludicrus.Once I picked up Larrson’s work it was extremely difficult to put it down. I sincerely hope, that they will make films of the remaining books and hopefully in English.
- Howard Fishman,
Just finished the trilogy – what a story. Have not read anything so compelling in a long time. I loved averything about the books and perhaps most of all the credibility of the characters. What a great, great pity that Steig dies so young.
- John R Marchant, Norhtants, UK,
I consider myself a rather slow reader, but raced through these novels, one right after the other. The third book was the only one that seemed tedious at times, until all of the loose ends started coming together. I so enjoyed these and wish that Mr. Larrson had lived to complete the series.

I have been engrossed and provoked by these 3 stories. I think they they have a veneer of realism but are essentially fantasy – not that that there is not deep personal experience underpinning the narratives – I would not dream of arguing with that – I can forsee many readers muddling the biographical detail of Larsson with the Trilogy. These novels follow a predictable pattern as they should for fantasy/sci-fi type – and this is not a dismissal – herein we find space to explore possibilities that the novel of manners /quotidien life and concerns – regardless of country or culture – cannot permit : female power (in these novels is almost magical): revenge: (gracious) acceptance of male priapism(!); complex morality – essentially a female area – cf carol gilligan jean baker miller
- medea,
What a loss ! Just finished the second of three….and ordered “Hornet’s Nest”. Wish they’d never end.
Someone told me that Eva, his companion, is going to publish more that he has written. Does anyone know ?

What a tragic loss, to lose such a writer, and to lose such a person. Wonderful books. What is one to do now.
- djs,
Absolutely wonderful.. Great characters. The theme of violence against women is strong & heartbreaking at times. Entertaining and compelling plots. It is a trajedy that his death has deprived the world of such a great writer and a person of such integrity and moral fortitude.
- Barb,
Well done!

The trilogy is simply outstanding — at least the first two. I’m saving the third because I don’t want the story of Lisbeth to end and will read it on a long upcoming trip so I can savor every moment as I did with the first two. I feel they are not only spell binding as stories but very well writtein/translated from a literary point of view for this genre. I can’t say enough positive about how great a read these books are. Up there with the best I’ve read over the last 20 years from early Ludlum, Martin Cruz Smith, etc.
- Jeff A.,
The third was the best! Enjoy!
- tj,
Have read all three books, They are exceptional. I had a great deal of trouble putting them down. His demise is a loss to the reding worls.
- Mary Ann,
Unbelievable talent and unique mind. Very sad He left too soon. I hope Eva will continue his work.
- Gloria S.,
Reading has been a part of my everyday activities since I was a young child. Through my parents I learned that reading is key to knowledge and self-discovery. I’ve read a great many novels ranging from romantic comedies, to horror, to murder mysteries, to the modern vampire love ballots of today’s modern classics. A favorite author of mine has been Jodi Picoult for some time now.
However, I have never in my lifetime read a trilogy as epic and mind-blowing as the “Millenium Trilogy”. Stieg Larsson was a brilliant man with a keen eye on how to write a valuable piece of literature. It is a sad misfortune that Larsson died before witnessing just how powerful his books have become. The mystery, the love, the affairs, and the truths about Lisbeth Salander and other characters kept me gripped and focused.
Mikael Bloomkvist and Lisbeth Salander are a team like no other. Whether it really was love or just a special friendship the duo that Larsson created was promising. I very much wish he could have lived to see the day his trilogy became infamous and his books came to life on the big screen.
Congrats Larsson; you would have been proud!

actually they have found 3/4 of a fourth book and manuscripts for both a fifth and sixth book.

I wanted Salander and Blomkvist together. A friendship can’t be all Salander is capable of. That would be the very labelling she’s struggled against her whole life.
If its ever filmed, I think anybody but Scarlett Johanson (sp?). Sure, she shares an ethnicity with Salander, but there is something cloying and flirtatious in Johannson’s manner that is so not Salander.
- ylv,
i´m 100% with you relating to the “lovestory” between salander an blomkvist. for me it´s beyond all bearing that this story won´t come to an end…
- Jennifer, Germany,
The best books I have read in years. Love Salander-unlike any charater I have ever come across. RIP Stieg, a legend.

I have spent the past 2 months reading all 3 books and hated them to end. Absolutely incredible work. I’ve also seen both movies; can’t stop thinking about the last few scenes of “girl who played with fire”. If she (Naoomi) doesn’t get the Oscar for her performance, I’ll be surprised. She was magnificiant. I’ve never seen anything like it. I just want to keep reading but nothing is left…maybe someday.
At least there will be a 3rd movie. I can’t wait.

I am concerned about the depiction of such savagery. Does such really exist in Sweden? How does Sweden feel about being so displayed? Does it put ideas into heads of disturbed minds to copy such things?
Do we cause more of this horribleness by telling of it?
Certainly it is a gripping plot, – but such ugliness!?
- m.G.Benit,
Savagery and ugliness exist everywhere if you look beyond the surface. We are fed with a picture of reality that may not always be true. Stieg shows what he saw .. I think. I’m Swedish and I feel good that it appears in these books. But there is also goodness and joy .. in Sweden and elsewhere. So do not despair. As we see it we can do something about it. If we like to .. and dare.
- John,
I watched the movie “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and am now a big fan of Stieg. Although, I am concerned with the spelling of the Salander name. Appears there is an ‘e’ missing.
My plan for my beach vacation is to read the first book and then to move on to the 2nd & 3rd and hope the 4th eventually gets published.
- David Sealander, Littlestown, PA USA,
I hadn’t read fiction in probably six years, maybe even more, until Stieg Larsson came along posthumously, and I spent the following five days without putting down a single book until it was done. I can safely say, and I’m sure I’m not only speaking for myself, that the Millennium Trilogy is to date the single literary fad worth more than the hype. It’s a shame Larsson isn’t around today to enjoy the praise he deserves. I think I might exhume his body and reanimate it for long enough for him to compose a fourth Salander/Blomqvist adventure…
- Uncle Wumpscut, Vancouver, Canada,
I´m with you!!!

This Trilology is far the best I have ever read. I consider Stieg Larsson the best writer EVER. I only hope there is a 4th book.

Same thoughts here. Just started the third novel. What research about math and finance, very thought provoking. LB

Just finished “The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo.” Although beginning of book was a bit tedious with financials, I found the book TERRIFIC. So sorry to hear of the author’s premature death. Looking forward to reading the next two.

So Impressed with the 1st of the trilogy, love the characters and the twists. I didn’t want to put the book down and didn’t want it to end….it’s a long time since I read a book that gripped me so totally. Relishing the though of the 2nd and the 3rd………
- Eileen, Ireland,
I just finished all three books, and wonder if, indeed, ‘they’ didn’t get him after all. It WAS a heart attack. was it? Many novels speak louder than non-fiction, and to a wider readership. His books speak to us on many levels. Great reads . . .
- Carol,,
Really??? Don’t know if you read anything on this website or on the back cover of all 3 books, but Steig Larsson is dead – there will not be a 4th book.
- Aaron,
I just finished the first book. Amazing the beginning not tedious at all it just flowed so well. I have the second book. Looking forward to reading that one. So sad that Mr. Larsson passed away. I wonder what other gratuitous books he would have written

I bought the girl with the dragon tattoo and the girl who played with fire to read on holiday and was hooked.I have ordered the girl who kicked the hornets nest from amazon and it has not arrived and its bank holiday weekend.Having finished the second novel two hours ago ,Iam now suffering Stieg Larsonn withdrawal symptons.
the postman better be early Tuesday morning.
What a read
- Howard King,
I totally agree!!
- Jennifer,
I received the trilogy as a birthday gift earlier this month. I had seen ads on TV for the movies but not the books. Finally started decided to treat my self and read the books. I couldn’t put the books down. I started book one – the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on Thursday and finished the Girl who Kicked the Hornets nest on Monday morning at 1.45. What a read feast! I look forward to anymore in the series there might be. What a tragedy this author was lost so soon.
- Annette,
What a great series. Wish there were more. I didn’t leave the house until the last word. Very well written.
- jill,
Having read the first two, I feel I should dress in my finest and set down as if to a culinary delight to slowly, with great relish, devour the third. What an amazingly wonderful set. I miss him already.

I also have just finished all three novels. Such a shame that he didn’t live to see how well they have done. What a riveting read. I am now sharing them with my family and friends. I have bought them as gifts and talk about them all the time. I also wondered if his death was an accident. Sad to have to live in fear because of your beliefs.Truth can be stranger than fiction. Such a talent now lost.
Look forward to the movies.

I heard the same thing. hoping it is true.

I have heard a rumor there is a fourth book. That Eva has this book in Stieg’s Laptop. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this story?
